Range of Treatment Offered

Once a student is admitted, HBAC provides integrated services tailored to the individual needs of the student. An Individual Education Plan (IEP) developed by each student’s personal interdisciplinary treatment team coordinates services. The treatment team usually includes the student, parents/guardian, case manager, psychiatrist where applicable, schoolteacher, counselor, and paraprofessional. The treatment team may include other professional staff such as psychiatrist, counselor, an occupational therapist, a physical therapist, or a speech therapist as related services, if required by the ARD. When appropriate, a representative from contracting agencies such as school districts among others are also included.

We strive to maximize well regulated independent functioning. Our goal is to transition students back to their home school campus as soon as is reasonably possible. Our goals are to develop interpersonal relationships with students that maximize growth while they attend school at HBAC. We strive to teach students the skills they need to more effectively function in their own school as well as in their home and community environment in a manner that most closely approximates naturally occurring situations.

Behavioral Treatment and Management

A wide variety of social learning and cognitive-behavioral techniques are used universally throughout the facility. These techniques include, but are not limited to, the use of positive reinforcement, natural consequences, modeling, and verbal prompting. At times, the dangerous behaviors that HBAC students exhibit are managed by HBAC staff, primarily the paraprofessionals, using Satori Alternatives to Managing Aggression (SAMA) techniques and other industry standard interventions for behavior management. HBAC does not use aversive behavior management techniques, seclusion, time out rooms, or mechanical restraint.

Education Services

HBAC is approved by TEA with certified teachers. The educational program focuses on basic academic skills, vocational skills, and social and life skills. The education program addresses school-based behavior problems that prevent a student from participating in regular school classes. An educational diagnostician through their local school district, or other qualified personnel are responsible for assessing each student’s academic skills, learning competencies, living skills and behavior. Related services such as occupational and physical therapy and speech-language services are provided through the contracting agency, or other agency if required.

Counseling and Psychological Services

Therapy and counseling services are provided as indicated by the psychological assessment completed during the admission process and directed by the service plan upon approval of counseling consent and evaluation approved through the ARD process. Students receive individual or group counseling depending on specific related services called for by the ARD. Family counseling is considered critical and encouraged to pursue through an outside source. Counselors are members of the interdisciplinary treatment team and participate in the development of service plans. Counselors provide staff training and consult with staff regarding the problems and treatment of individual students. Counseling staff include master’s degree level licensed professional counselors.
